POEM FROM A PRISON CELL | POESIA DA UNA CELLA DI PRIGIONE |
| |
Is it my mind or my heart that I’ve lost | È la testa o il cuore che ho perso |
to you, Arab lands, home of enemies? | per te, terra d’Arabia, patria di nemici? |
If you held our minds with law and reason | Se facessi presa sulle le nostre menti con la legge e la ragione, |
if you respected our opinions | se rispettassi le nostre opinioni, |
then you’d hold my heart as well | allora stringeresti anche il mio cuore. |
Who am I? Don’t ask the days about me— | Chi sono io? Non chiedete di me ai giorni — |
I’m nothing but a prisoner | non sono altro che un detenuto |
in an isolation cell | in una cella di isolamento. |
Here in my country, oppression | Qui nel mio paese, l’oppressione |
is what takes our rights away | è ciò che si porta via i nostri diritti. |
Here, ignorance | Qui, l’ignoranza |
determines our convictions | determina le nostre convinzioni. |
Here, the people | Qui, la gente |
no longer have a voice, cannot | non ha più voce, non può |
spell out the language of reproach | scandire il linguaggio del rimprovero. |
My country, if insight required an apology | Al mio paese, se l’introspezione richiedesse un’apologia, |
I’d never stop apologizing | io non smetterei mai di chiedere scusa. |
Tell your children, east and west | Ditelo ai vostri figli, da est ad ovest |
—and keep telling them, until | — e continuate a dirlo, finché |
the birds sing it in the branches— | gli uccelli lo canteranno tra i rami — |
that a people without opinions | che una persona senza opinioni |
is nothing but a herd that’s thirsty | non è altro che un gregge arso dalla sete |
yet blind to the nearby oasis | ma che non vede l’oasi ormai prossima. |
Fight for your convictions: this is how | Lottate per le vostre convinzioni: questo è il modo |
you ride your steeds and bear your arms | per inforcare i vostri destrieri e prendere le armi |
against a ruler who seeks to oppress | contro un sovrano che cerca di opprimere |
and who molds your silence | e che modella il vostro silenzio |
into a pretext for injustice | nella forma di un pretesto per l’ingiustizia. |
Tell them that I, stubborn, persistent | Dite loro che io, ostinato, persistente |
was unmatched in my victory | non ebbi pari nella mia vittoria |
and my defeat | e nella mia sconfitta. |
Time may have disgraced me | Il Tempo può avermi incriminato |
but I haven’t been easy for time to shackle | ma non è stato facile per il tempo ammanettarmi. |
Lord of rabble, what of yours compares | Signore della gentaglia, quale dei tuoi può reggere il confronto |
to the thrones of Ibn Ad’s people | con i troni della gente di Ibn Ad |
in Iram, the city of pillars | a Iram, la città dai pilastri |
which God spoke of in His revelation? | della quale Dio parlò nella Sua rivelazione? |
You’ve been insincere, a false prophet on earth | Voi siete stati insinceri, falsi profeti in terra: |
though you, like Jesus, spoke in the crib | per quanto voi, come Gesù, abbiate parlato dalla culla, |
You’ve wounded truth, and my proud allegiance | avete sfregiato la verità, e la mia orgogliosa devozione |
is lifeless now, and clad in black | è senza vita ora, e vestita di nero. |
How can you expect obedience | Come potete esigere l’obbedienza |
when you call for injustice? | quando chiedete l’ingiustizia? |
If we obeyed you, then what would become of our principles? | Se vi obbedissimo, che ne sarebbe allora dei nostri princìpi? |
When we pray, who do we pray to? | Quando preghiamo, a chi rivolgiamo la preghiera? |
To God, or to God’s servants? | A Dio, o ai servitori di Dio? |
There’s no room for virtue under oppression | Non c’è spazio per la virtù sotto il giogo dell’oppressione, |
there’s no room for vice on the road of justice | non c’è spazio per il vizio sulla strada della giustizia. |
Whoever wrongs and deceives his people | Chiunque nuoce alla sua gente e la inganna |
will never be able to guide them | non sarà mai capace di guidarla. |
If history were objective, it would tell | Se la storia fosse obiettiva, direbbe |
how you’ve sought glory in my so-called enmity | quanto avete cercato la gloria nelle mia cosiddetta ostilità. |
Go ahead and be miserable, though you and I | Andate avanti e siate disperati, benché voi ed io |
are not enemies | non siamo nemici: |
I avoid enmity, and make enemies | io evito l’ostilità, e mi faccio nemici |
only of those who are truly worthy | solo coloro che ne sono veramente degni. |
If you ask after my finest day | Se chiedeste del mio giorno migliore |
on an occasion when words of pride are called for | in un’occasione nella quale siano richieste parole d’orgoglio |
I’d call history to mind, and say: | richiamerei alla mente la storia, e direi: |
It was when I was a prisoner in my own country | Fu quando ero prigioniero nel mio stesso paese, |
for when you shackled my wrists | perchè quando mi ammanettaste i polsi |
history gave me strength | la storia mi diede la forza |
and confidence in victory | e la fiducia nella vittoria. |
These disgraceful chains | Queste ignobili catene |
are power in my hands, not power | sono potere nelle mie mani, non potere |
for those who lord it over me | per quelli che spadroneggiano su di me. |
Doors and guards, wake me up gently | Porte e guardie, svegliatemi gentilmente |
whenever I sleep too long | ogni volta che dormo troppo a lungo. |
It is not desire | Non è il desiderio |
but fear | ma la paura |
that makes me ask this, fear | che mi fa chiedere questo, la paura |
that the enemies will see my weakness when I sleep… | che i nemici vedano la mia debolezza mentre dormo… |
though I no longer know | malgrado io non lo sappia più |
if my eyes are closed, or if | se I miei occhi sono chiusi, o se |
I’ve been awake all this time | sono stato sveglio per tutto questo tempo. |
