Ο ΠΟΛΕΜΟΣ ΤΟΥ ΠΙΕΡΟΥPETER’S WAR

Κοιμάσαι μέσα στα χωράφια του σταριούYou lie slain, in a cornfield sleeping,
δεν είναι τα τριαντάφυλλα ή οι τουλίπεςand neither the rose or the ladytulip
που σε προστατεύουν από τη σκιά των λαγουμιώνare watching you in the shadow of ditches,
αλλά είναι χίλιες κόκκινες παπαρούνες.but thousands of blood-red poppies.

« στις όχθες του χειμάρρου μου"Along the banks of this country stream
θα ήθελα να κατεβαίνουν οι ασημόχρωμοι λούτσοιI’d like to spy the silver pike swimming,
και όχι τα πτώματα των στρατιωτώνand not a suite of soldiers’ corpses
αγκαλιασμένα από το ρεύμα του ποταμού »brought with the stream, like dead branches."

Έτσι έλεγες και ήταν χειμώναςYou said so, and it was a cold winter,
και όπως οι άλλοι προς την κόλαση πήγαινεςand, just like others, you’re bound to hell
λυπημένος όπως ήσουν υποχρεωμένος να κάνεις,marching so sadly to your sad duty,
ο αέρας σου φτύνει το χιόνι στο πρόσωποthe wind’s spitting snow in your face.

Σταμάτα Πιέρο, σταμάτα τώραStop your steps, Peter, stop your steps now!
άσε να περάσει ο αέρας για λίγο από επάνω σουAllow the wind to fondle your body,
κουβαλάς επάνω σου τις φωνές όλων που πέθαναν στις μάχεςyou bear the voice of all the fallen
όσων έδωσαν μια ζωή και σε αντάλλαγμα πήραν ένα σταυρό.who gave their lives for a wooden cross.

Μα εσύ δεν τον άκουσες και ο χρόνος περνούσεBut you didn’t hear them, and time passed by
με τον ρυθμό των εποχών χόρευεςwith the seasons at a java step
και έφτασες να περάσεις τα σύνοραand so you were ready to cross the border
μια ωραία μέρα την άνοιξηςin a warm and bright spring day.

και ενώ προχωρούσες με την ψυχή στο στόμαAnd walking on shouldering your soul
βλέπεις έναν άνθρωπο στο βάθος της πεδιάδαςyou noticed a man down there in the valley
που είχε την ίδια σου ψυχική κατάστασηwalking in the same sad mood as you
αλλά φόραγε στολή με διαφορετικό χρώμαbut with a uniform of a different colour.

Ρίξε του, Πιέρο, ρίξε του τώραShoot him, Peter, shoot at him now!
και μετά την πρώτη βολή,ρίξε του ακόμαShoot again to make sure he’s dead,
ώσπου να τον δεις άψυχοuntil he falls dead to the ground
να πέφτει κάτω και να καλύπτεται από το αίμα τουand covers his own blood deadly wounded.

«και εάν του ρίξω στο μέτωπο ή στη καρδιά"And if I aim at his front or at his heart
θα έχει μόνο λίγο χρόνο για να πεθάνειI’ll leave him only the time to die,
αλλά για μένα θα υπάρχει χρόνος για να δωbut I shall have plenty of time
να δω τα μάτια ενός ανθρώπου που πεθαίνει»to look in the eyes of a dying man."

και ενώ εσύ διστάζεις και το σκέπτεσαιAnd while you are so kind to him,
εκείνος γυρίζει, σε βλέπει, φοβάταιhe turns around, sees you and gets frighten’d;
και παίρνοντας στα χέρια το πολυβόλοhe brings his rifle to firing position
δεν σου ανταποδίδει τη χάρη.and doesn’t repay you for your favour.

Έπεσες κάτω στη γη σιωπηλάYou fell to the ground without even a cry
και κατάλαβες σε ένα μόνο λεπτό,and you noticed in no less than a moment
ότι ο χρόνος σου δεν επαρκούσεthat you’d not have enough time
για να ζητήσεις συγχώρεση για κάθε αμαρτία σουto beg pardon for all your sins.

Έπεσες κάτω στη γη σιωπηλάYou fell to the ground without even a cry
και κατάλαβες σε ένα μόνο λεπτό,and you noticed in no less than a moment
ότι η ζωή σου θα τέλειωνε εκείνη την ημέραthat your life had be put an end,
και ότι δεν θα υπήρχε ποτέ πια επιστροφήand that you’d never come back home.

« Νινέτα μου, για να πεθάνεις το μήνα Μάη"Oh Jenny darling, to die in May
χρειάζεται πολύ υπερβολικό κουράγιοone needs much and maybe too much courage.
Νινέτα μου όμορφη, κατευθείαν στη κόλασηOh Jenny darling, I’d like best
θα προτιμούσα να πάω τον χειμώνα»to go to hell in a cold winter day."

και ενώ τα στάχια καθόταν να σε ακούσουνAnd while the corn was listening to your words
μέσα στα χέρια κρατούσες το τουφέκιyou held your rifle clenched in your hands,
μέσα στο στόμα έσφιγγες λόγιαyou held your words frozen in your mouth
πολύ παγωμένα για να λιώσουν στη ζέστη του ήλιουthat would never have melt in the sunrays.

Κοιμάσαι μέσα στα χωράφια του σταριούYou lie slain, in a cornfield sleeping,
δεν είναι τα τριαντάφυλλα ή οι τουλίπεςand neither the rose or the ladytulip
που σε προστατεύουν από τη σκιά των λαγουμιώνare watching you in the shadow of ditches,
αλλά είναι χίλιες κόκκινες παπαρούνες.but thousands of blood-red poppies.
