Una casa in riva al fiume

UNA CASA IN RIVA AL FIUME | A HOUSE ON THE RIVER BANK |
A house on the river bank, an old, ramshackle house Maybe, someone in past times lived and died there, Only the sky all around it, the sky and nothing else Until the town advanced with its hoarse, upsetting cries. When you pass by there now, you see drawings on its walls Hiding uncertain objects of somebody in distress, Food remains and cans dragging on there like ghosts. When I pass by there, I feel like dreaming I am a mason, I feel like infusing life again, and heat into those walls To defeat future, to open wide a way for liberation |
A house that you don't know And that you have never known, A door that you'll never open When you look at it, and you don't know |
I could dream of myself living there with cats and comrades, Barricading myself in anarchies while remaking bathrooms Or connecting clandestine electric current to infinite While giving life to a dream staying up until morning comes. Sure, yes, we could bombard, machine-gun these slums With refusal, with rays of hope, with happiness, with joy, Two minutes away from that camp with its heavy odours, With its clear eyes, its Mercedeses with their flamboyant tapestries, With its accordion shots, its books all along Poderaccio street While the spring sky is setting all hopes in fire, Thousands of old houses rejoicing, thousands of rivers in distance |
That house you don't have And that you have never had, That life you won't live again When you live it, and you don't know |
And I imagine all the crossings between past and present, Peasant hats and all the tools to dig and spade past and present, And the old peasant is talking to the Pakistani child, The country girl is chatting with the Indian seller And her grandma is at the window, and shakes her head To a boy with crested hair smiling to him like to a lunatic. My submerged, mixed worlds, multicoloured, disconnected, My confusion of languages inside my armed thoughts With the transparent walls of my boundless loves In the dawns and in the sunsets where the river looks like a sea That doesn't want any borders, that doesn't want any limits, Not even yesterday and tomorrow, not even the oscillating time |
That house you don't know And that you'll dream of tonight, too, That house, you know, Is as big as your troubles |
Then I suddenly hear noises and see clandestine looks While they're swinging clothes and striking wax matches, There's nobody at the windows, there's nothing in the trash From rubber boats, from poverty, from wars and from hunger, Maybe I notice bad breaths, maybe I make out a hand Coming from unknown lives, from so remote countries, And I'm running ahead and backwards, the sky's turning pale blue, And I can see in the horizon the burgmeister's bulldozers coming, And uniforms, helmets, shields, cops with their truncheons Moving everyone out of there with savagery and foolishness, Now you can see those faces mixing with those of the old peasants, And the house on the river bank is flying away with its wax matches |
| A house that you don't know And that you have never known, When you pass by there again Looks like it has never existed. |
That old road, now barred with concrete blocks, That old house, now falling in ruin with its upwind ghosts, Barrack buildings and the bridge up there with its wild traffic While I'm going back home walking with my dazed look. I'ts a house on the river bank, an old, ramshackle house Maybe, someone in past times lived and died there. |
| That house you don't know And that never wants to die, A door that will open When this world will be destroyed. |
