KONIEC I POCZĄTEK | THE END AND THE BEGINNING |
| |
Po każdej wojnie | After every war |
ktoś musi posprzątać. | someone has to clean up. |
Jaki taki porządek | Things won’t |
sam się przecież nie zrobi. | straighten themselves up, after all. |
| |
Ktoś musi zepchnąć gruzy | Someone has to push the rubble |
na pobocza dróg, | to the side of the road, |
żeby mogły przejechać | so the corpse-filled wagons |
wozy pełne trupów. | can pass. |
| |
Ktoś musi grzęznąć | Someone has to get mired |
w szlamie i popiele, | in scum and ashes, |
sprężynach kanap, | sofa springs, |
drzazgach szkła | splintered glass, |
i krwawych szmatach. | and bloody rags. |
| |
Ktoś musi przywlec belkę | Someone has to drag in a girder |
do podparcia ściany, | to prop up a wall. |
ktoś oszklić okno | Someone has to glaze a window, |
i osadzić drzwi na zawiasach. | rehang a door. |
| |
Fotogeniczne to nie jest | Photogenic it’s not, |
i wymaga lat. | and takes years. |
Wszystkie kamery wyjechały już | All the cameras have left |
na inną wojnę. | for another war. |
| |
Mosty trzeba z powrotem | We’ll need the bridges back, |
i dworce na nowo. | and new railway stations. |
W strzępach będą rękawy | Sleeves will go ragged |
od zakasywania. | from rolling them up. |
| |
Ktoś z miotłą w rękach | Someone, broom in hand, |
wspomina jeszcze jak było. | still recalls the way it was. |
Ktoś słucha | Someone else listens |
przytakując nie urwaną głową | and nods with unsevered head. |
Ale już w ich pobliżu | But already there are those nearby |
zaczną kręcić się tacy, | starting to mill about |
których to będzie nudzić. | who will find it dull. |
| |
Ktoś czasem jeszcze | From out of the bushes |
Wykopie spod krzaka | sometimes someone still unearths |
przeżarte rdzą argumenty | rusted-out arguments |
i poprzenosi je na stos odpadków. | and carries them to the garbage pile. |
| |
Ci, co wiedzieli | Those who knew |
o co tutaj szło, | what was going on here |
muszą ustąpić miejsca tym, | must make way for |
co wiedzą mało. | those who know little. |
I mniej niż mało. | And less than little. |
I wreszcie tyle co nic. | And finally as little as nothing. |
| |
W trawie, która porosła | In the grass that has overgrown |
przyczyny i skutki, | causes and effects, |
musi ktoś sobie leżeć | someone must be stretched out |
z kłosem w zębach | blade of grass in his mouth |
i gapić się na chmury. | gazing at the clouds. |
