THE RECRUITED COLLIER (JENNY'S COMPLAINT)IL MINATORE ARRUOLATO

O what's the matter wi' you, my lass,“Che hai ragazza mia
And where's your dashing Jimmy?e dov’è il tuo Jimmy audace?”
O, the soldier boys have ta'en him up“I soldati lo hanno preso
And sent him far, far from me.e mandato lontano, lontano da me.
Last payday he went off to townL’ultimo giorno di paga andò in città
And them red-coated fellowse quei compagni con la giubba rossa
Enticed him in and made him drunklo intrappolarono e lo fecero ubriacare,
And he's better gone to the gallows.così era meglio se finiva sulla forca!

The very sight of his cockadeAlla vista della sua coccarda (1)
It sets us all a-crying,ci siamo messi tutti a piangere
And me I nearly fainted twice.e io sono svenuta due volte,
I thought that I was dying.credevo di stare morendo,
My father would have paid the smartmio padre lo avrebbe riscattato (2)
And he ran for the golden guinea,e andò di corsa con la ghinea d’oro,
But the sergeant swore he'd kissed the bookma il sergente giurò che aveva baciato la bibbia,
And now they've got young Jimmy.e ora si sono presi il giovane Jimmy.”

When Jimmy talks about the wars,Quando Jimmy parla delle guerre (3)
It's worse than death to hear him.sarebbe meglio se fosse la morte ad ascoltarlo,
I have to go and hide my facedevo andare a nascondermi il viso
Because I cannot bear him.perché non riesco sopportarlo,
A brigadier or grenadierun soldato di brigata o un granatiere
He says they're bound to make him, dice che lo faranno diventare,
But aye he laughs and cracks his jokesla prende sul ridere e scherza,
And bids me not forsake him.e mi prega di non dimenticarlo”

As I walked ower the stubble fieldsMentre camminavo per i campi di stoppie,
Below it runs the seamaccanto alla miniera di carbone (4)
I thought of Jimmy hewing there, credevo che ci fosse Jimmy al lavoro,
But it was all a dream.ma era tutto un sogno,
He hewed the very coals we burnfu lui a cavare il carbone che bruciamo
And when the fire I'm lighting,e quando il fuoco mi illumina
To think the coals was in his hands, penso al carbone tra le sue mani
It sets my heart to beating.e il cuore mi batte forte.

For three long years he's followed me.(Per tre lunghi anni fummo insieme
Now I must live without him.e ora devo vivere senza di lui.
There's nothing now that I can doNon c’è altro che possa fare
But weep and think about him.che piangere e pensare a lui.)
So break my heart and then it's ower.Così che mi si spezzi il cuore e che sia finita.
So break my heart, my dearie,Così che mi si spezzi il cuore, amore mio,
And lay me in the cold ground,e poi distendimi nella fredda terra
For of single life I'm weary.perché di vivere da sola sono stanca”
NOTE
1) l’uso della coccarda sul cappello era tipico del Settecento quando il suo colore indicava l’appartenenza a una certa ideologia
2) to pay the smart= “Smart” significa “smart money, which was money paid by a person to obtain exemption from some disagreeable office or duty. It was applied to money paid by an army recruit to obtain release before being sworn in. (Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase and Fable). In “A Dictionary of Buckish Slang, University Wit and Pickpocket Eloquence,” di Frances Grose, edizione del 1811
“Smart money- money allowed to soldiers or sailors for the loss of a limb or other hurt received in the service (better known as smart ticket)”. Oppure in in the Military Dictionary, James, 1802:
“Smarts: The different sums which are received by recruiting parties under the heading of smart money are frequently so called.”
4) coal mine
