Dulce Et Decorum Est

DULCE ET DECORUM EST | DULCE ET DECORUM EST |
Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, | Piegati in due, come vecchi accattoni sotto sacchi, |
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge, | con le ginocchia che si toccavano, tossendo come streghe, bestemmiavamo nel fango, |
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs, | fin davanti ai bagliori spaventosi, dove ci voltavamo |
And towards our distant rest began to trudge. | e cominciavamo a trascinarci verso il nostro lontano riposo. |
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots, | Uomini marciavano addormentati. Molti avevano perso i loro stivali |
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame, all blind; | ma avanzavano con fatica, calzati di sangue. Tutti andavano avanti zoppi; tutti ciechi; |
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots | ubriachi di fatica; sordi anche ai sibili |
Of gas-shells dropping softly behind. | di granate stanche, distanziate, che cadevano dietro. |
Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!—An ecstasy of fumbling | Gas! Gas! Veloci, ragazzi! – Un brancolare frenetico, |
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time, | mettendosi i goffi elmetti appena in tempo; |
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling | ma qualcuno stava ancora gridando e inciampando, |
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime.— | e dimenandosi come un uomo nel fuoco o nella calce… |
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light, | Pallido, attraverso i vetri appannati delle maschere e la torbida luce verde, |
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning. | come sotto un mare verde, l’ho visto affogare. |
In all my dreams before my helpless sight | In tutti i miei sogni, prima che la mia vista diventasse debole, |
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning. | si precipita verso di me, barcollando, soffocando, annegando. |
If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace | Se in qualche affannoso sogno anche tu potessi marciare |
Behind the wagon that we flung him in, | dietro al vagone in cui lo gettammo, |
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face, | e guardare gli occhi bianchi contorcersi nel suo volto, |
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin, | il suo volto abbassato, come un diavolo stanco di peccare; |
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood | se tu potessi sentire, ad ogni sobbalzo, il sangue |
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs | che arriva come un gargarismo dai polmoni rosi dal gas, |
Bitter as the cud | ripugnante come un cancro, amaro come il bolo |
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,— | di spregevoli, incurabili piaghe su lingue innocenti, – |
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest | amica mia (*), tu non diresti con tale profondo entusiasmo |
To children ardent for some desperate glory, | ai figli desiderosi di una qualche disperata gloria, |
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est | la vecchia Bugia: Dulce et decorum est |
Pro patria mori. | pro patria mori. |
(*) Visto che la poesia, almeno nella sua prima stesura, era espressamente dedicata alla scrittrice fanatica militarista Jessie Pope, mi son permesso di cambiare “amico mio” in “amica mia”. |
