Versione emiliano/veneta raccolta dalla Bonifica Emiliana Veneta.
I WAS POOR, BUT A DESERTER

I was poor, but a deserter
and I deserted from my frontiers
and the emperor Ferdinand
he persecuted me.

I passed valleys and mountains
pursued by gendarmes
and one night I fell asleep
and I woke up in chains.

With my hands and feet in chains
they took me to the law court
and the judge asked to me
"Why are you in chains?"

And I told him the truth:
"I was walking through the forest
when a thought came to my mind:
I'll be a soldier nevermore."

Dear father, you're dead and buried,
Dear mother, you're still in life
your son is put to the torture
and condemned without reason.

Fellow soldiers, you who march
to the blare of the trumpet
when you'll pass by my grave
you'll cry: have mercy upon me!
