NEL GIORNO DELLA LIBERAZIONE | THE DAY OF LIBERATION |
| |
Forse qualche anziano ancora ricorda | Some old people maybe still remember |
la violenza di un'esplosione | the violence of an explosion |
che rubò il futuro a tre giovani vite | depriving three young lives from their future |
nel giorno della liberazione. | the day of liberation. |
| |
Le truppe tedesche sui colli Sabini | The German troops on Sabine hills |
battevano la ritirata | were beating a retreat |
ma la voglia nel cuore era di seminare | but they were still longing for shedding, |
ancora sangue. sangue lungo la strada. | for shedding blood on their way. |
| |
E con la freddezza che ha solo il boia | With an executioner’s indifference |
minarono la via principale | they mined the main road |
che congiungeva due paesi | that linked the two villages |
per trasformarla in una trappola mortale. | and turned it into a deadly trap. |
| |
Ma la cosa venne saputa | But all this came to the ears |
da tre figli della Sabina | of three young sons of Sabina. |
che animati soltanto di altruismo e coraggio | And being so brave and altruistic |
raggiunsero quella strada in collina | they got uphill along that road. |
| |
E grazie alla loro fatica | And thanks to their hard toil |
fu quasi del tutto liberato | the way was almost totally cleaned |
quel tragitto dagli ordigni nascosti | from mines buried in the ground, |
ma il destino vigliacco attendeva in agguato. | but cruel fate was lying in wait. |
| |
Infatti una mina più elaborata, | In fact, a more powerful mine |
preparata da sapienti mani assassine | worked out by crafty murder’s hands |
giocò loro lo scherzo più brutto | played the nastiest trick on them |
scrivendo sulla loro esistenza la parola fine. | and put an end to their lifetime. |
| |
Proprio in quel punto si trova una pietra | Just where they died, a stone plaque |
che ricorda il loro gesto e la loro memoria, | stands in memory of their deed. |
che ricorda chi è morto a vent'anni, | Remember those who died so young |
chi è morto donando il suo nome alla storia. | and graved their names in history. |
| |
Se un giorno passate su quella collina | Should you one day pass by the hill |
che un tempo accolse tre croci | that held three crosses in those days |
porgete un orecchio al soffio del vento | so lend your ear to the wind whispering, |
e forse udirete le loro voci | maybe you can hear their voices |
| |
Che vogliono soltanto dire | that only want to say one thing |
a chiunque le ascolterà | to anyone, who’ll be listening: |
di non dimenticare mai nessun uomo | never, oh, never forget anyone |
che ha perso la vita per la libertà. | who lost his life for liberty. |
