Il titolo della canzone fa riferimento, da una parte, ad una frase riportata nei vecchi libretti di istruzioni "Protect and Survive" - "the radioactive dust, falling where the wind blows it, will bring the most widespread dangers of all" - dall'altra ad una ninna nanna tradizionale:

Rock-a-bye, baby,
In the tree top.
When the wind blows,
The cradle will rock.
When the bough breaks,
The cradle will fall,
And down will come baby,
Cradle and all.

So long child, I'm on my way
And after all is done, after all is done
Don't be down, it's all in the past
Though you may be afraid

So long child, it's awful dark
And I've never felt the sun
I dread to think of when
When the wind blows

When the wind blows (x3)

Life burns a savage wound, angry and wrong
Trusting a twisted word, you'll run, run away
You'll take him home
You'll spit and taunt him
But they won't believe you
No matter what you'll say

So long child, it's awful dark
I never felt the sun
I dread to think of when
When the wind blows

When the wind blows (x3)

Versione italiana di Gloria G.
QUANDO SOFFIERÀ IL VENTO

Ci rivedremo, piccola, ora andrò per la mia strada;
e dopo che tutto sarà compiuto, dopo che tutto sarà compiuto;
non essere triste, appartiene tutto al passato,
sebbene tu possa avere paura.

Così, arrivederci, piccola
è tremendamente buio
e non ho mai sentito il sole
e temo a pensare a quando
a quando soffierà il vento.

quando soffierà il vento.

La vita brucia una ferita selvaggia,
arrabbiata e sbagliata
