Jimi Hendrix Woodstock

Woodstock 1969: the U.S. anthem played by the heavily distorted Jimi Hendrix Stratocaster became the strongest antiwar song ever. Hendrix's "Star Spangled Banner" has no words.

Not all songs need lyrics to make a statement about the Vietnam War. At Woodstock Jimi Hendrix played his own all guitar version of "The Star Spangled Banner." Hendrix used awesome distortion and unconventional guitar techniques to create powerful imagery through sound. Hendrix creates this imagery when he deviates from the actual song and uses high notes to symbolize a falling bomb and then distortion which sound like the explosion. He also manages to make the sound of gun fire by pounding quickly on his guitar. Then if you listen closely you can hear the sound of argument, which symbolizes the argument between the countries’ governments and within the population of our country. After all these powerful sounds Hendrix returns to the end of the actual "The Star Spangled Banner."
(this introduction was taken from a webpage which has now been deleted)

ABOUT UNORTHODOX STAR SPANGLED BANNER
from Wikipedia

The controversial nature of Hendrix's style is epitomized in the sentiments expressed about his renditions of the "Star Spangled Banner", a tune he played loudly and sharply accompanied by simulated sounds of war (machine guns, bombs and screams) from his guitar. His unforgettable renditions have been described by some people as a generation's statement on the unrest in U.S. society, and by others as an anti-American mockery; oddly symbolic of the beauty, spontaneity, and tragedy that was endemic to Hendrix's life. When taken to task on the Dick Cavett Show on the "unorthodox" nature of his performance, Hendrix replied, "I thought it was beautiful."

THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER

Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, now conceals, now discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines on the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wiped out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, for our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner forever shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Ch’esso sventoli a lungo

Hendrix at Woodstock

Jimi Hendrix’s 18 August 1969 performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the Woodstock Music and Art Fair has been characterized as an expression of transcendent political resistance as well as crude anti-U.S. drivel. Drawing on Hendrix’s own archive of recordings, writings, interviews, stage banter, and especially live performances, this article analyzes Hendrix’s artistic engagement with the United States national anthem by locating his Woodstock Banner as a central moment
