Aveva appena 16 anni.

An anonymous Breton “lai” originally from a XIV century manuscript, recorded live by Tri Yann at the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud in 1995 and included in the album “Portraits”, published the same year.

In the same abbey are kept the mortal remains of Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, of Henry II King of England and, above all, of their son Richard Lionheart (in his turn the composer of “lais”, among which one is most famous for having been preserved with its original tune, Ja nus hons pris). All belonged to the Plantagenet dynasty, and this very old antiwar song is focused exactly on the figure of Arthur Plantagenet, Duke of Brittany and posthumous son of Geoffrey Plantagenet, Constance of Brittany’s husband.

Born in 1187, a niece of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II, Arthur was given the Duchy of Brittany by his grandfather, Henry II, with the hope of restoring a vast kingdom reuniting the whole country as it was in King Arthur’s time.
Arthur Plantagenet’s efforts were led to total failure by John Lackland, King Henry II’s only surviving son after the death of Richard Lionheart (1199). In 1203 Arthur Plantagenet was imprisoned by his uncle and mercilessly slaughtered. His dead body was then thrown into the Seine near Rouen. He was only sixteen years old.

croix rouge a l'espalle
a mener guerre aux damnés

En grande estoffe un cavalier
s'en vient a la Reyne
en son chef est planté
un rameau de plant de genest,
que les fleurs en sainient
a mener guerre aux damnés.

Ces fleurs de sanc que présaiger?
mande Alienor au cavalier.
C'est du genest de ton esté,
de ton yver le sanc glacié.

Tu renieras le Roy franceis,
il en aura haine
pour l'Engleis marier.
Tost luy feras mout héritiers,
qui se feront guerre;
mener guerre est damné.

L'un de Bretaigne aura Duché,
couronne dans Rennes,
blanc mantel herminé.
Tel est d'un mariage forcé,
forcé par la guerre;
mener guerre est damné.

Viendra Joffroy les Bretons gaigner,
et paix férir en son Duché.
Viendra ton Roy en ton Duché,
feu férir et te délaisser.

Un air de dol soneurs sonez,
Joffroy de Bretagne
en joute mort a croisé,
occi dans un tournoi franceis,
malheur en Bretaigne;
guerre jouer est damné.

Un air joeulx soneurs sonez,
fortune en Bretaigne,
Arthur anuyt nous est né.
Grande esperance en son Duché,
mais tost subira guerre;
mener guerre est damné.

Du Roy Engleis senz terre nommé,
Arthur en embuche est tombé.
Du Roy Engleis ardé par l'espee
Arthur en la Seyne est jeté.

Alas! Alas! soneurs sonez
dol est en Bretaigne,
de son Prince noié,
Arthur en sa sezisme annee
sanglante est la Seyne,
mener guerre est damné.

Yre et dol, soneurs sonez,
peine est en Bretaigne,
de son Prince noié,
par son maudiltz oncle desvié;
sanglante est la Seyne,
mener guerre est damné.

ARTURO PLANTAGENETO

Sono in Oriente [*] il Re di Francia,
la regina Eleonora
giovane e di gran bellezza,
e molti gentiluomini, radunati
con una rossa croce sulla schiena
a portar guerra agli infedeli

Un cavaliere di gran lignaggio
viene dalla Regina
e sulla testa reca
un ramo di ginestra [**],
e i fiori ne stillano sangue,

che si faranno guerra;
e portar guerra è cosa dannata.

Uno avrà il Ducato di Bretagna
e in Rennes [***] sarà incoronato
con un bianco manto d'ermellino. [****]
Cosi' è per un matrimonio forzato,
forzato dalla guerra,
portar guerra è cosa dannata.

Verrà Goffredo a vincere i bretoni

ma presto subirà la guerra;
portar guerra è cosa dannata.

Del Re inglese chiamato Senza Terra
Arturo è caduto in imboscata.
Colpito dalla spada del Re Inglese,
Arturo è gettato nella Senna.

Ohimé! Ohimé! Sonatori, sonate,
lutto è oggi in Bretagna
per il suo principe annegato,
Arturo, nel suo sedicesimo anno.
Rossa di sangue è la Senna,
portar guerra è cosa dannata.

Ira e lutto, sonatori, sonate,
ché dolore è in Bretagna
per il suo principe annegato,
messo a morte dal suo zio maledetto;
rossa di sangue è la Senna,
portar guerra è cosa dannata.

NOTE

[*] Per le Crociate

[**] L'emblema reale.
