The Benandanti (“Good Walkers”) are an agrarian visionary
tradition in the Friuli district of Northern Italy. The Benandanti claim to travel out of their bodies while asleep to struggle against malevolent entities to ensure good crops and health for the season to come. Between 1575 and 1675, the Benandanti were tried as heretics under the Roman Inquisition. Historian Carlo Ginzburg suggested a relationship between the Benandanti cult and the shamanism of the Baltic and Slavic cultures, a result of diffusion from a central Eurasian origin, possibly 6,000 years ago.
“Badanti” is a word used in Italy for “carers”, who work hard to alleviate the loneliness of the elderly and the sick. There are more than 1.500.000 women who work as carers in Italy, most of them coming from Romania and Ukraine.
