“It’s No Game” is the latest development in Bowie’s taste for protest songs, an angrier “Fantastic Voyage,” a broader “Repetition.” A man is woken up by a noise in the street. He sits, flicking through TV channels, disgusted and bewildered by what he’s seeing—the latest set of brownshirts, protesters clubbed on the streets, old dictators, new presidents (he turns from a documentary on refugees to a dish-soap advertisement). The world is reduced to flickering images, silhouettes and shadow, but as awful as the world is, the singer’s still in exile from it. “I am barred from the event,” he starts screaming. “I really don’t understand the situation.” One verse ends with a line seemingly out of Noel Coward: “To be insulted by these fascists—it’s so degrading.”

Ndr]

Shiruetto ya kage ga kakumei o miteiru
Mo tengoku no giyu no kaidan wa nai

Silhouettes and shadows watch the revolution
No more free steps to heaven
It's no game

Ore genjitsu kara shime dasare
Nani ga okkote irunoka wakara nai
Doko ni kyokun wa arunoka
Hitobito wa yubi o orareteiru
Konna dokusaisha ni iyashime rareru nowa kanashii

I am bored from the event
I really don't understand the situation
And it's no game

Documentaries on refugees
Couples 'gainst the target
You throw a rock against the road
And it breaks into pieces
Draw the blinds on yesterday, and it's all so much scarier
Put a bullet in my brain, and it makes all the papers

Nammin no kiroku eiga
Hyoteki o se ni shita koibito tachi
Michi ni ishi o nage reba
Kona gona ni kudake
Kino ni huta o sureba
Kyohu wa masu
Ore no atama ni tama o buchi kome ba
Shinbun wa kaki tateru

So where's the moral
when people have their fingers broken?
To be insulted by these fascists
it's so degrading
And it's no game

Shut up!
Shut up!

[Part 2]

Silhouettes and shadows
watch the revolution
No more free steps to heaven
Just walkie-talkie - heaven or hearth
Just big heads and drums - full speed and pagan
And it's no game

I am barred from the event
I really don't understand the situation
So where's the moral?
People have their fingers broken
To be insulted by these fascists
It's so degrading
And it's no game

Documentaries on refugees
couples 'gainst the target
Throw a rock against the road
and it breaks into pieces
Draw the blinds on yesterday
and it's all so much scarier
Put a bullet in my brain
and it makes all the papers

And it's no game

Children round the world
put camel shit on the walls

They're making carpets on treadmills
or garbage sorting

And it's no game

Traduzione letterale in inglese della parti in giapponese:

shirueto ya kage ga kakumei wo miteiru
(Sillouettes and shadows are watching the revolution)
mo tengoku no jiyu no kaidan wa nai
(free [as in without restrictions] steps of heaven are no longer there/here)
ore wa genjitsu kara shime dasare
(I [a ‘tough’ masculine ‘I’] have been excluded from reality)
nani ga okotteiru no ka wakaranai
(I don’t understand what’s going on)

(to be abused [taunted] by this strong-willed leader [dictator?] is sad)
nanmin no kiroku eiga

NON E' UN GIOCO [Parte I e II]

[Parte I]

1
2
1-2-2

Shiruetto ya kage ga kakumei o miteiru
Mo tengoku no giyu no kaidan wa nai

Sagome e ombre
osservano la rivoluzione
Niente più passi liberi verso il paradiso
Non è un gioco

Ore genjitsu kara shime dasare
Nani ga okkote irunoka wakara nai
Doko ni kyokun wa arunoka
Hitobito wa yubi o orareteiru
Konna dokusaisha ni iyashime rareru nowa kanashii

Sono annoiato dagli eventi
Non riesco proprio a capire la situazione
E non è un gioco

Documentari sui rifugiati
Coppie nel mirino
Lanci un sasso sulla strada
E si frantuma in pezzetti
Abbassa il sipario sul passato,
e fa tutto più paura
Ficcati una pallottola in testa, e finirà su tutti i giornali

Nammin no kiroku eiga
Hyoteki o se ni shita koibito tachi
Michi ni ishi o nage reba
Kona gona ni kudake
Kino ni huta o sureba
Kyohu wa masu
Ore no atama ni tama o buchi kome ba

Zitto! Stai zitto!

[Parte II]

Sagome e ombre
osservano la rivoluzione
Niente più passi liberi verso il paradiso
Solo walkie-talkie - paradiso o casa
Solo grandi teste e tamburi - a ritmo pieno e pagani

Documentari sui profughi,
coppie nel mirino
Lancia un sasso sulla strada,
e si farà in pezzi
Abbassa il sipario sul passato,
e fa tutto più paura
Mi infilo una pallottola in testa,
e finisce su tutti i giornali

E non è un gioco

I bambini sparsi nel mondo,
gettano merda di cammello sui muri

Fanno tappeti spingendo le pale,
o smistamento di spazzatura

E non è un gioco
