[RV]

However incredible it may seem (but nothing is incredible in a world that forgets everything too quickly), there are lots of people thinking Nazism “was no such evil thing after all”. And there are, you won’t believe your eyes, some not only thinking it was no evil thing after all, but even it was good. So we see them, now in the stadiums, now at the concerts of their filthy bands, with their skinheads, hoist swastikas and other nazi symbols or streich their arm for the “Sieg Heil” salute. We are told not to worry too much about this. We are told that they are only a bunch of “picturesque” folks. In practice, the same things that were said some years ago, just until those “picturesque folks” came to power, duly and well supported by the major capitalist groups. So, we don’t cease being worried. We don’t give up doing what we can so that memory and history don’t get lost, or rather, eliminated and deliberately softened to create the conditions for a new Nazism. Its typical signs are under our eyes, every day: hate for the different, unrestrained securitarism inculcated with false, artificial fears hiding the fears, the true ones, that we all should have; more and more overt racism. Even shirts, no matter if black, brown or green. In Italy, a Nazi-style party like the “Northern League” has been part of the nation’s government until few months ago. And it’s only a small example.

So, we think it’s always urgent to show what Nazism exactly was. Not only with great events, not only with Auschwitz, not only with doctor Mengele, not only with Oradour-sur-Glâne or Marzabotto. By this ballad by Bert Brecht, we want to show it with an “everyday”, trivial episode. In 1935 the so-called Nuremberg Laws were passed in Germany, the laws that banned Jews from every aspect of civil life; it was the prologue to extermination, to the Endlösung. Among other things, the Nuremberg Laws forbade any German of “Aryan race” to have any kind of contact with Jews, under penalty of severe punishment. This is the story of Marie Sanders, a girl from Nuremberg, who was guilty of a most serious wrong: she loved a young Jew. She was denounced, perhaps by some “conscientious” neighbor (it happens often so under a tyranny: your neighbor, the one you say hello every morning, perhaps someone in your own family may be your enemy without your knowing it, and may be ready to become your ruin; see Egy mondat a zsarnokságról, the poem song by the Hungarian Gyula Illyés). Marie Sanders was captured, and humiliated. Her head was shorn, and she was obliged to walk through the streets of Nuremberg with a sign around her neck that said: “MARIE SANDERS HAS BEEN IN BED WITH A JEW”. Humbled in her love and womanhood. Do such things belong to the past? Well, they are exactly the same things that many French girls and women, “guilty” of having fallen in love with a German, had to endure after France’s liberation (see La tondue). It’s the same thing a Chechenian girl, Malika Soltayeva, had to pass through only few months ago, thanks to the Russian-friendly militias of “normalized” Chechenia, that have pledged trust to the “democrat” Vladimir Putin, such an intimate friend of Dubya and Berlusconi. Is Nazism dead? Maybe, but it’s not buried. Let’s bury it.[RV]
In Nürnberg machten sie ein Gesetz
Darüber weinte manches Weib, das
Mit dem falschen Mann im Bett lag.
„Das Fleisch schlägt auf in den Vorstädten
Die Trommeln schlagen mit Macht
Gott im Himmel, wenn sie etwas vorhätten
Wäre es heute Nacht.“

Marie Sanders, dein Geliebter

Geschoren.
Die Gasse johlte. Sie
Blickte kalt.
Das Fleisch schlägt auf in den Vorstädten
Der Streicher spricht heute nacht.
Großer Gott, wenn wir ein Ohr hätten
Wüßten wir, was man mit uns macht."

e verranno qua.

Maria Sanders lascia perdere il tuo uomo
che ha i capelli troppo neri
ed un naso che non va.

La fame cresce, i tamburi
rullano più forte che mai.
Oh mio Dio, hanno già deciso
e verranno qua.

come sempre.

La fame cresce, i tamburi
rullano più forte che mai.
Oh mio Dio, hanno già deciso
e verranno qua.

i tamburi battono a martello.
Dio santo, se stavano progettando qualcosa,
sarà per stasera.”

Marie Sanders, i capelli del tuo amante sono troppo neri;
come invece hai fatto ieri.
“C’è sempre più gente nei sobborghi,
i tamburi battono a martello.
Dio santo, se stavano progettando qualcosa,
sarà per stasera.”

Mamma, dammi le chiavi,
le cose non sono brutte come sembrano.
La luna è sempre la stessa.
“C’è sempre più gente nei sobborghi,
i tamburi battono a martello.

Streicher* parla stasera.
Dio onipotente, se ascoltassero
saprebbero cosa ci stanno facendo.”

Fu condannato a morte e impiccato a Norimberga.

From From the Holocaust to the German Unification
BALLAD OF THE "JEWISH WHORE" MARIE SANDERS

They passed a law in Nuremberg
That made many a woman cry
Who lay in bed with the wrong man.
"The flesh is pounding in the suburbs.
The drums are sounding mightily.
God above, if they were planning something,
It would be tonight."

Marie Sanders, your lover's hair is too black.
Better not tend to him
As you did yesterday.
"The flesh is pounding in the suburbs.
The drums are sounding mightily.
God above, if they were planning something,
It would be tonight."

Mother, give me the key
It's not as bad as it seems.
The moon is yet unchanged.
"The flesh is pounding in the suburbs.
The drums are sounding mightily.
God above, if they were planning something,
It would be tonight."

One early morning, around nine
She rode through the town
In only a shirt, a sign around her neck, her head shorn
The alley shook with laughter.
Her glance was cold.
"The flesh is pounding in the suburbs.
Streicher* speaks tonight.
Almighty God, if they would listen,
They would know what is being done to us."
NOTE to the translation

BALLAD OF THE JEWS' WHORE MARIE SANDERS

In Nuremberg they passed down a law.
It's causing many girls to cry
Who with the wrong man have been laying.
The flesh runs out to the edge of town.
The drums are pounding with might.
God in Heaven, if they're bringing something down
It’ll be tonight
Marie Sanders, now your lover is too dark of hair
Better you are no more today what yesterday you were to him
Mother, give me the keychain, it could not be quite so bad,
The moon's the same as ever
One early morn at nine in her shirt she rode through town,
Round her neck a sign, her hair was shaven,
The streets were jeering, her stare was cold
The flesh runs out to the edge of town,
& Streicher speaks out tonight.
Oh my God, if we could really hear the sound,
We would know what they’re doing to us.

María Sanders, vas a perder a tu hombre,

Ona
Chłodno spoglądała.
"Na przedmieściach z mięsem już całkiem krucho
Streicher po nocy szczeka.
Boże, gdybyśmy chociaż mieli ucho
Wiedzielibyśmy, co nas czeka."

Hi,

First thank you for you great website. I just want to signal a little mistake in Marie Sanders' Song : at the end it is not "was mann mit uns macht" but "was man mit ihnen macht".
So not "what they are doing to us" but "what they are doing with them" or "what they are used for" some thing like that (I am French, not English, it is "ce que l'on fait d'eux" in French)
my sources are : Bertolt Brecht, Die Gedichte edited by insel taschenbuch ; and the score by Eisler : AusgewÄhlte Lieder, III (ed. VEB Deutscher Verlag für Musik. Leipzig).

I think it is important because in other texts, Brecht insists on the fact that as a writter you must denounce "evitable causes". If the poem ended like you say, it would be just depressing. But with Brecht's end, it gives hope that things could maybe change.

Anyway, I would be glad to learn they are other sources with other ending !!!

THank you again for your site,

Marie Soubestre.
