This song is based upon a true story about a southern soldier, 32 years of age and the father of 8 children from Fayette County. He was forced to go and engage in the Civil War at that age in 1861. He did not own slaves and didn't support slavery..

It may well be appropriate that the Confederate Flag not fly over the capitol, but a descendant shouldn't be stigmatized if he still honors some aspects of that flag because his Great Grandfather was killed protecting his homeland and family after the northern invasion of the south. He neither owned slaves nor approved the system of slavery..
There's a flag that flies in Dixie
I have to look up to
It stands for someone special
And what he died to do..
Great Grandpa hated slavery
And he loved his God and man
He bore arms to save his family
When he took his final stand..

Eight children and his woman
Justified the war he fought
Outnumbered by the enemy
Great Grandpa didn't balk
He died for them at Shiloh
But he made them pay a price
And he'd never have regretted
His day of sacrifice..

And I know he fell with honor
When he wore that coat of gray
He stood tall beside his brothers
At the ending of his days.

Though his flag was torn and tattered
He still fought for it with pride
And I know he fell with honor
In the selfless way he died..

And a man should not deny me
When I hail the Stars and Bars
It stands for a fallen hero
At his rest beneath the stars
I can't deny that banner
Though it meaning long has blurred
Cause when history was written
Some truths were never heard

And I know he fell with honor
When he wore that coat of gray
He stood tall beside his brothers
At the ending of his days.

Though his flag was torn and tattered
He still fought for it with pride
And I know he fell with honor
In the selfless way he died..

I think back to long ago
On that southern battlefield
When they say He died for nothing....
That wound never heals

And I know he fell with honor
When he wore that coat of gray
He stood tall beside his brothers
At the ending of his days.

Though his flag was torn and tattered
He still fought for it with pride
And I know he fell with honor
In the selfless way he died..

There's a flag that flies in Dixie
I have to look up to..
