The Fields of Athenry is probably the best-known song about the Great Famine which raged over Ireland from 1845 until 1849.
The main character is awaiting transportation to the penal colony Botany Bay for stealing corn from a food depot. Whilst imprisoned his thoughts wander off to the abandoned fields of Athenry, a village just east of Galway Town.
Charles Trevelyan, the Permanent Secretary at the Treasury during most of the Famine years, was reluctant to hand out his corn and when the corn depots opened they mainly contained maize, or Indian corn. Due to its hard kernel the Irish were unable to process the maize.

When The Fields of Athenry was published in 1979 by Pete St. John the rumour was spread that the words already had been published in the 1880's. Evidence supporting this rumour however is never produced and St. John's claim is widely acknowledged.
Once published Paddy Reilly did a great job in distributing the song.

Probably due to the singable tune and a balanced mixture of misery and love the song is extremely popular in nearly every Irish music scene. Apart from the traditional and rebel scene you can hear the song in many rugby and football grounds of Ireland. But also in Great Britain The Fields of Athenry is proclaimed the favourite song of the London Irish Rugby Football Club and the Celtic Football Club from Glasgow. In Celtic cycles the song is often peppered with pro-IRA chants by which the song has become rather controversial.

In the course of the years a few dozen versions and interpretations of the song appeared. Obviously it's a matter of taste, but goosebumps appear on our forearms by the voice of Brian O'Donnell. Brian, then a ten year old, performed The Fields of Athenry (entitled Bad News on the soundtrack) as street singer in the film Veronica Guerin.
Also worth mentioning is the arrangement of Shebeen entitled Garvaghy Road.

Triskelle.eu

(Cattia Salto)
By the lonely prison wall.
I heard a young girl calling
Michael they are taking you away,
For you stole Trevelyan's corn.
So the young might see the morn.
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay.

Low, lie the fields of Athenry,
Where once we watched the small free birds fly.
Our love was on the wing,
We had dreams and songs to sing.
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.

By the lonely prison wall.
I heard a young man calling
Nothing matters Mary when you're free,
Against the famine and the Crown
I rebelled they ran me down
Now you must raise our child with dignity.

Low, lie the fields of Athenry,
Where once we watched the small free birds fly.
Our love was on the wing,
We had dreams and songs to sing.
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.

By a lonely harbour wall
She watched the last star falling
And that prison ship sailed out against the sky
Sure she'll wait and hope and pray
For her love in Botany Bay
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.

Low, lie the fields of Athenry,
Where once we watched the small free birds fly.
Our love was on the wing,
We had dreams and songs to sing.
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.

- Michael ti stanno portando via,

ella guardava l’ultima stella cadere

teníem somnis i cançons que cantar.

"Res no importa, Mary, quan estàs lliure!

THE FIELDS OF ANFIELD ROAD

Outside the Shankly Gates
I heard a Kopite calling:
HillsboroughShankly they have taken you away
But you left a great eleven
Before you went to heaven
Now it's glory round the Fields of Anfield Road.
All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and he could play)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing Of the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road
Outside the Paisley Gates
I heard a Kopite calling
Paisley they have taken you away.
You led the great 11
Back in Rome in 77
And the redmen they are still playing the same way
All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and he could play)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
Of the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road.
Outside the Hillsborough flames
I heard Kopite mourning
What so many taken on that day
Justice has never been done
But theirs memory will carry on
And it's the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road.
All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and he could play)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
Of the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road.
Of the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road.

"Michael – diceva – ti stanno portando via,

Sperava e pregava, lei

Per sfamare i figli e me
Nella baia una galera ti attende già

Torna da me a Athenry
Sopra i verdi campi dove ti amai

ogni giorno prega e spera
Vive e attende alla scogliera
Vaga sola per i campi di Athenry
