We Marched

Fiona Keenan
Language: English

[2003]
Songwriter: Fiona Keenan

This song was inspired by the 2003 anti-war marches: 'I sort of have the idea of lots of people sitting together singing this off song-sheets!'.
I called you that afternoon from graft on street
My eyes saucer-wide with the sight and the sound
Everywhere colour and stomping of feet
Telephone cord swinging as I gave you a listen

In an age when any pertinent political act
Makes for a fine t-shirt slogan or a slot on TV
The need for our action was a matter of fact
Yes, this phoney war made a marcher of me.

And armed with our differences and our divides
We became one thundering voice
For we knew that the hand that now sought this man
Once supplied him with weapons, his tactics and toys

And why prop up a dictator just to topple him later?
With excuses so thinly disguised
Yes, freedom and democracy were never the stakes
It was oil or a foothold or a military base.

In an age when any pertinent political act
Makes a fine t-shirt slogan or a slot on TV
The whole world demanded the right questions were asked
Yes, this hope and this noise made a marcher of me

While the Middle East continues its rattle and shake
Western power stirring, and on either side
Those that give orders to deploy and hold borders
Are never those dodging roadside bombs or filling body bags?

And they may not have listened to
The first time in history
When we marched in advance of a war
But I've seen Dublin alive with the spirit of something
Like maybe my small life could mean so much more

In an age when any pertinent political act
Makes for a fine t-shirt slogan or a slot on TV
The people's own doctrine of pre-emptive strike
Yes this phoney war made a marcher of me
Yeah, this hope and this noise made a marcher of me
Yes, this phony war made a marcher of me..
